Yup. That’s road paint. Went on a highway ramp in the middle of the night: no signs, no cones, no workers. Just wet paint.

I tried fiercely to get it off at in the middle of the night about 2 hours after it happened, but it turned out I was just making things worse.(See the streaks? That’s clear coat scratch).

Kinja'd!!!

You need some pretty strong stuff to get it off. I tried the recommended “WD-40" method that was posted by the DOT. Didn’t help at all. Had to move up to some pretty nasty stuff.

Kinja'd!!!

Pictured: actual purchased product.

With this in hand, I spent the next 2 hours in the sun trying to gently get it all off. I had to stop using latex gloves because this stuff was literally burning through them, and transferring the blue glove colour onto the car.

After many microfibre towels, I finally got most of it off.

Kinja'd!!!

I have also created some spots underneath that I have to paint/clear coat, which is extremely frustrating because this car was repainted by the previous owner last year. The paint was mint.

My initial failure left the most noticeable scars, and I didn’t bother with the wheel wells yet.

Kinja'd!!!

Here’s hoping I can wax it out. And also that my fingers don’t fall off.

Anyone have experience dealing with scratches like this?

Is that a metallic paint job?

Paint for highways and roads should be listed in publicly available specifications for road construction. You should have looked up the type of paint or manufacturer (sometimes they will specify) to narrow down a removal method. Alternatively, you could have called a striping contractor for additional information. I’m sure some would have been happy to help. Sorry about your paint job - that’s an extremely shitty thing to happen.

Nope. Espresso Black off a Nissan Sentra (CAE is the paint code).

Has a neat gold fleck in it when the light hits.

Did the re-paint omit the stone guards down there? Because where those scratches are, I’m pretty sure there’s supposed to be stone guard “stickers”.

Wow, that sucks.. I’d be tempted to insurance claim that..

:( so sorry. That sucks so much. What color did the previous owner paint it? The front fender looks really nice in the second-to-last photo.

Usually when people post nitpicky stuff about parking lot dings I roll my eyes. But this, this really sucks. I’m sorry this happened to you. So lame. I hope it cleans up okay, so far it’s looking good.

You may be able to buff out the scratches. But to be honest I wouldn’t attempt that at home as a first-timer.

Might be worth asking around at a few body shops to see what they would charge to buff the clear, etc.

I had this happen to a colleagues dark blue metallic Megane. It took ages of rubbing it off with tar and glue remover. Thankfully it was just the front drivers side wheel arch and going about a metre back from it. I’ve since been told a steam cleaner would remove it safely but haven’t tried it myself. The wheel arch was a pain with the tar and glue remover but was easier to remove with a piece of thin blast or a blunt blade which didn’t leave any visible sign of scratching to the plastic wheel arch lining.

Good luck mate.

The picture is at the back wheel. It certainly looks reversible though, doesn’t it?

The respray is Espresso Black off a Nissan Sentra (CAE is the paint code).

Here’s another shot in the sun :D

I’m seriously considering just spray painting the wheel arches >_>

This is as far as I got as an “official” method. The town it’s coming from isn’t too far away from me, and I’ve seen the company crawling the highways before.

I may have to get a detailer to help me with the final step.

damn. that sucks. I would have thought a thermoplastic paint would be easier to remove.

I would pay dearly for that in the long run, unfortunately. The insurance companies around here are universally terrible.

Yeah, ahead of the back wheel is where the stone guards go. IIRC they go up to that body line behind the rear door.

To be fair to the document, I read 1-2 DAYS as 1-2 HOURS. This is what happens when you’re panicking at 4:00am. I didn’t want to let the paint cure, so I opted to do something asap.

Keep in there fella. Flake off the large parts of paint and then use the paint thinner on the smaller bits.

Over here (BC) there is a method of submitting Claims towards the provincial highways/highway contractors. They mostly handle rock chips from graders, pothole wheel damage, etc.

I would think road construction at night with no signs or warning would be negligent.

http://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/tr…

Get a quote for a respray and compare it to your deductible/ins costs.. it doesn’t take much to spend a lot on paint..

Maybe I’m thinking of the huge ones RX-8s have. Maybe Miatas only got the textured paint down there?

Now that looks familiar! Textured paint under the “curve”, perfect for rusting! (one of my pinch welds, where you see that jack stand, has collapsed from rusting!)

Lovely NB you’ve got there, much better paint than my own! Unfortunate to see crap like that happen. Would like a cut and polish work to fix the scratching and remove any residue? Maybe like a clay job could work as well to clean up anything left. I can’t imagine anything is permanently damaged. Sucks though with how mint that paint is!
